Efforts to build up model Fair Trade supply chain for Cotton is being taken up jointly by Fair Trade Forum – India, Formaper Italy and CTM Altramercato through a three year project.  The project is supported by European Union.

Fair Trade Cotton: Project Profile

One of the major objectives of the project is to promote sustainable production in the cotton sector by introducing innovative production and Supply Chain Management Systems in India and Nepal. Eventually this will be ensuring access to better socio-economic conditions to the marginalized producers. The model supply chian, will explore production of  Fairer cotton, through a more transparent supply chain as a result of the project.

The project was launched in a kick off meeting organised April 2010. Three Training of Trainers’ workshops on topics such as ‘on Organic Production’, ‘Fair Trade Quality and Certification and ‘Supply Chain Development and Cluster Network’ were already organised in the capacity building phase of the project.

Three rounds of field visits and meeting with producer beneficiaries were also organised in which the project team visited the implementation areas. The project team also is also building up networking with some of the cotton producer associations, ginning, spinning and weaving units as well. A Continuous Sustainable Management System (CSMS) is also being developed, which will be enabling the players in the supply chain to build up their Fair Trade adherence systems
