PURKAL STREE SHAKTI SAMITI
Purkal Stree Shakti Samiti is a women empowerment non-profit organization. It was established in the year 2003 in village Purkal at the Mussoorie foothills in Uttarakhand. The mission of the founders was to empower the village women around this village. They will be trained to earn a regular monthly income so that they become economically independent and thereby earn respect in their family and community and later become leaders and agents of social change.
The crafts taught to these women were patchwork, applique, quilting and embroidery. The women produce beautiful patchwork and applique quilts, baby and children quilts, kitchen accessories, bags and pouches. The women are taught right from the outset to put in their very best so that the finished products are perfect in quality and design. They are taught to treat the customer fairly even as they would expect the customers to treat them. Fair trade principles have been practiced in the organization from the beginning and the artisans also inculcate these practices in their business and life.
Several welfare measures such as free transport to the center, subsidized lunch, free training and early childhood center to help young mothers earn are the highlights of the program. These are supported by funding. The women work from their own self-help groups which handle their two bank accounts – a business account and a savings account. The society gives support to the self-help groups by way of managing their accounting, purchases, marketing, design and training. The self-help groups share the expenses of the society for the services rendered to them. Thus the business belongs to the self-help groups and the society is functioning as an umbrella organization.
