Kottapuram Integrated Development Society (KIDS)
Kottapuram Integrated Development Society was established in 1987 in Kerala. It is under the lead of the Catholic Church, the Diocese of Kottapuram. The Head of the Diocese, the Bishop, is the Head of KIDS at the same time.
The society strengthens marginalized communities through organizing people into Self Help Groups. By now there are 11 departments consisting of several SHG’s, like department of children’s development or department of agriculture development. The organization was started with a department for women empowerment and was facilitating jobs for those to create an extra source of income for their families. The organic women producer groups today involve 800 women, who produce natural fiber out of the Keralan plants screw pine and water hyacinth and make it into bags or floor mats. KIDS provides capacity building through skill development to their producer groups. Due to the fact that the Society has a strong relationship to the ministry of textiles, their SHG’s get access to different development schemes like scholarships or health insurances.
