Established in 1997 Aurospirul is an eco-social and health friendly enterprise situated in Auroville, an international township in south India. It produces the algue Spirulina. The algue has a high nutritional value due to containing a number of different, important micronutrients. Spirulina is a low-fat, low-calorie and cholesterol-free nutrient comprised of an unusual high level of protein, essential vitamins and phytonutrients such as the rare essential fatty acid GLA, sulfplipids, glycolipids and polysaccharides. Additionally, Spirulina has properties that are favourable for a wide range of health conditions. Next to Spirulina Aurospirul is supplying Herbals and Supergreens.
The Spirulina Farm employs mostly economically disadvantaged women, who can contribute with some extra income to their families wellbeing. They are provided a meal a day, which also contains the nutricious Spirulina.
Moreover, Aurospirul tries to raise more awareness about the algue through welcoming schoolclasses and other visitor to their farm and supplying Spirulina mother culture to other indian farmers.
