Fighting Child Labour: Fair Trade Model Discussed

A Delhi state level Stakeholder Meet on ‘Fighting Child Labour in Home Based Craft Sector’ was organised to discuss a  potentail Fair Trade & Education based model to address child labour. The meeting was organised on 14th February 2013 at JHT Hotels, greater Kailash, New Delhi. The program was a part of the project ‘Fighting Child Labour’. Traidcraft, Fair Trade Forum – India (FTF-I) and Centre for Education & Communication (CEC) are the project partners.The project is supported by the European Union. Represnetatives from partner organisations, FTF-I members and government representatives participated in the meeting.  


An action research has been completed by CEC and key elements of a 'Fair Trade and Education Based Model' to fight child labour in the home based craft sector have been identified. The meeting discussed the findings of the research. The model would encompass meausres such as ensuring minimum wages for home workers, transparent and accountable systems in the supply chains, ensuring social security benefits for home workers, access to quality education (at subsidized or zero cost) to children of home workers, policy advocacy and involvement of the community, among others. The final version of the model will be launched in April 2013.
